The Decider Has Spoken

July 18, 2007 | Jojo,Mr. Squirrel,Quadrant Plotting,What the J?

The who? Oh yes, Mr. Squirrel requested I refer to him as THE DECIDER on days when he’s co-judging with me. How does one go from co-judgeship to being the one decider? Doesn’t sound very “co” to me. It is easier to place all final decisions in his hands so if the losers get snippy, I can direct all bitterness towards him. Yes, that’s my reasoning.

The winning caption for last week’s What the J(ojo)? Photo Caption Contest is…

  1. bagpipes. no thanks. cool in look and theory. unbearable in sound. harry potter….it’s passed me by. one day i’ll read all the books and see the movies, but otherwise it’s over my hermione-mispronouncing head.

  2. Bagpipes are for funerals. No.

As for Harry Potter, I’m a complete sucker. So yes, but I plan on buying the book on Sunday or Monday, I haven’t pre-ordered and I’m not waiting in line. Though, um, I may have done so before. That being said, if anyone ruins the ending for me? Their ass is mine.

  3. Bagpipes–love. I know, I know. I can’t help it.

Harry Potter–I really like the books and the movies, but I’m not super rabid. I mean, I didn’t rearrange my work schedule or postpone a vacation so I can have the day off to read the new book. I don’t participate in any kind of online fan sites or anything. I have no interest in dissecting the plot / symbolism / gossip. I go to the midnight movie premieres, and I wear a Harry Potter T-shirt, but I don’t go in costume. I don’t have a Gryffindor tattoo.

  4. I should of went with “rug”. “Rug” is way funnier than “toupee”. that woulda locked it up.

Bagpipes: Not IN LOVE with them but they do give a sense of occassion (and occasionally a headache, as sometimes In S. Bos. they are played along my street for NO REASON by old men. Like, the hell?)

Potter: No , not participating. I’m sure it’s lovely but no, not gonna touch it w/ a ten foot pole.

  5. Oh, in case I wasn’t clear, I am in the middle on bagpipes..

  6. 1. Bagpipes – LOOOOOOOOVE. They get my blood pumping and make me want to start fights, just like a good Scot should. I can’t explain the yearning in my heart that starts when the pipes begin to wail. I just know that I can’t get enough of the sound of them.

    2. I stopped reading after the 3rd book. I just couldn’t get into the 4th, and I live in BF Idaho, so I haven’t seen any of the movies since #2 either. So color me “meh” for HP.

  7. I totally concur with the Decider. That was good!
    1) Bagpipes – no. They sound like dying cows.

    2) Totally don’t get it. Never read nada or seen a movie.

  8. 1. Bagpipes – YES. Love them! They remind me of Jamie from the Outlander series (I’m secretly in lust with him, forever and ever) and plus, I adore Scotland. YES! They’re haunting. I love ‘em.

    2. Harry Potter – A HUGE YES. I am a massive HP dork. Love the books, love the films, and secretly wish I could go to Hogwarts and play with spells and stuff. And have an owl. I want one.

  9. Hmm, bagpipes: not really. And HP: Hell Yes! Can I even add that I find almost-18-year-old Daniel Radcliffe delicious?

  10. I missed out on the last quadrant but by George! I AM HERE!
Bagpipes…hmmm…I think they sound beautiful when played but they are usually only played at a funeral. And death is not good. So I’m going with hate.
The Harry Potter phenomenon is awesome. I have never read any of the books or seen the movies because it’s just not my thing but I think the bond of all of those junkies is amazing.

And that’s what I think about that.

  11. Bagpipes, kinda neutral, but if I had to lean one way it would be hate. Harry Potter…oh yea. I looooove me some HP.

  12. whoot! I won!! I’ll give you my two moo cards at BlogHer too. Those are cool, aren’t they.

    Bagpipes – LOVE

    HARRY POTTER – OBSESSIVELY LOVE

  13. Bagpipes–I’m torn. At a funeral I attended, so beautiful and fitting. Practicing in the room next to mine in college, hate, hate hate.

Harry Potter–Love it. Currently sticking my head in the sand and trying to avoid any spoilers.

  14. Bagpipes, a little on the hate side. They are too sad.

Harry Potter, totally in it except I probably won’t have time to read the book at all this weekend because THIS YEAR I have a freaking TODDLER, whose poor planning was THAT? And don’t even get me started on the movie…I would have licked the screen if I couldve.

  15. P.S. in the Bunny way, not because I like the movie that much

  16. Just copy My Buddy Mimi’s answer for me please.

Also, I like the books so much I refuse to watch the movies. Except, the last one pissed me off big time, and not for the reason you think. I am just getting tired of Harry’s friends not beleiving him when something big is going down. Geeze guys, you have only ignored him when he was right in the last five books, maybe it is time to freaking listen for once?

  17. I adore the sound of bagpipes playing Amazing Grace. Sends shivers down my spine. And, for all you piper haters, playing them purportedly will drive away geese, so you don’t have a lawn full of nasty geese poo!

Harry Potter – hmm. I love that so many people love the books – I think anything that gets kids off the TV and reading is a good thing. The books themselves were decent to read. HATE the movies. The HP movies are for people who didn’t read the books, not for those who did. I do wonder who will die in the new book, and I pre-ordered it so I can read it quickly and right away and not have someone spoil it for me. I have considered, but not yet bought, the “Hogwarts Dropout” bumpersticker. I guess I am slightly above the middle for HP!

  18. Congrats to CPA Mom!! I have to say, the captions are definitely gettin funnier (except for mine, which are the suckage).

    Ok, now for the quadrant!

    Bagpipes – do not like

Harry Potter – love, but not that dress up like a wizard or some shit kind of love, ya know.

  19. I can’t believe I didn’t win. Mr. Squirrel is dead to me. DEAD.

I hate to say it, but I love bagpipes. (Not enough that I own any bagpipe music. But you know.) My sister’s high school had a bagpipe section in their marching band. I always thought that was cool.

I admit to reading, and loving, all of the Harry Potter books. I’ve seen the movies…but could care less about them. (Haven’t seen the new one and don’t know if/when I will.) I will get the new book the day it comes out. But not sure when Babboo will allow me to read it. So yeah…like the books, but am not a freak about them. Repeat, not a freak.

    Plot that!

  20. Bagpipes — Like the idea, detest the sound.
Harry Potter — Love, but not enough to spend my hard-earned money on a book the very second it comes out. I’m borrowing my sister-in-law’s copy as soon as she’s done, and until that time I am more than a little afraid to come near the internet for fear of spoilers. I will admit that I’m getting so caught up in the hype this week that if I hadn’t just had to buy a refrigerator I may just stop by a barnes and noble on sunday and see if they have any copies left. I’m dying to know what happens, and I will be really sad if someone spoils it for me.

  21. I love how with a bagpipe I automatically think of a man in a kilt. But then again, I also think of Fat Bastard from Austin Powers. So, meh. All in all, they do kind of fascinate me.
Harry Potter? Never seen it, never read it, don’t get it, don’t really care to.

  22. I HATE bagpipes… my bagpipe story: There was a boy at my grade school named Charles Beesucker and his mom (who totally looked like a dude) came and played the bagpipes (in full kilt regalia) for us EVERY year… poor kid.
I LOVE Harry Potter and will be picking up my copy at 12:01 am tomorrow night. Reading it voraciously. Covering my ears/avoiding TV/internet for fear of spoilers (the most likely spoiler will actually come from my fast reading 13 year old, who last time spilled the beans about Dumbledore!)

  23. Just a suggestion for all of those people who associate bagpipes with funerals, go listen to Seven Nations (http://www.sevennations.com/). That song that comes up? You’re hearing bagpipes in the background.

  24. Bagpipes make me laugh and we all need a good laugh. Put me down for “love.” Dated a guy once named Slade (seriously) who had a bag piper tattoo on his arm. He conveniently forgot to tell me that he was still married. Ask Mrs. Squirrel about dinner at his house. That whole situation makes me laugh because it was so weird.

Harry Potter: put me “on the fence.” I haven’t read the books but I go to the movies because my husband asks me to go with him – I think it’s cute that he likes HP so much.

  25. I am a band geek, but bagpipes, no.

Harry Potter? I am a complete sucker. Book preordered and everything. Although I will not stay up all night to read the book and I have googled Potter Spoilers. Cause I need to know. And how people are going to be driving by lines of people waiting for the book yelling out the spoilers? I think that’s HILARIOUS.

  26. I love the bagpipes! My great-grandfather was from Scotland, so I adore the pipes!

Also, I very much love Harry Potter…very much..love it!

  27. Bagpipes + funerals + men with knobby knees in skirts = no thanks

Harry Potter- never read any of them but I can understand the obsession thing.

  28. I love bagpipes, they give me goosebumps everytime I hear them!
And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Harry Potter! I just went to see the movie and I’m waking up early tomorrow to go get the book!

  29. Bagpipes: HATE
Harry Potter: While I could say hate… that wouldn’t be fair since I’ve never read any of the books or seen any of the movies. So I will say… refuse to participate.

  30. [...] « The Decider Has Spoken [...]

  31. [...] While I’ve read all of the Harry Potter books, I would not say that I’m a huge fan. Yes, I enjoy the books. Yes, I’ve bought them on the day they came out. Yes, I’m excited to see how this one ends. (I have a very strong suspicion it will end in a way that will upset a lot of people.) But I’m not a die-hard fan. (Don’t worry.) [...]

  32. Smitty…I had a friend named Slade in high school. But he’s gay. So I’m pretty sure that’s not your married bagpipe tattoo guy.

  33. Harry Potter – Fan (Yea! Can’t wait for my book to arrive!)
Bagpipes – Not a fan…right now thinking about them makes my head pound. Thanks for the honorable mention!

  34. Okay, bagpipes, I think they are interesting and have a cool historical factor. Plus they are loud as hell and I had a trumpet as a kid, so I love the loud instruments.

Harry Potter. Could care less. Sorry. I know lots of people who are totally into it, but I can’t. I haven’t even watched the movies, which is like the lazy person’s way of getting into a book. I even love to read and usually read a 400 page book in one sitting, so if I could get into them it would be great to have something to read for two or three days. Bah. I can’t do it though.

  35. Bagpipes – Love! When played correctly. Half of my family is Scottish and my great uncle plays them beautifully. I get goosebumps when I hear Amazing Grace.

Harry Potter – OMG when will it end?! Hate. So much.

  36. Bagpipes – love them. They play them during Senior Chapel at my daughter’s high school.

Harry Potter – I am a voracious reader, but, for once in my life, I just couldn’t do it.

  37. Bagpipes – LOVE!

Harry Potter – totally don’t get. But I don’t refuse to get it, I just never got it to begin with and feel retarded trying to get it now so late in the game.

    If that made any sense

  38. Bagpipes–like, don’t love. Just a bit over the line.

Harry Potter–like very much, but not obsessed. Always forget the plotlines from the last book when a new one’s published, so I have to skim/reread and then I’m the last to know. My little sister just got married and we got them two copies so that they could both read simultaneously over the honeymoon.

  39. Potter – Hmmm, I read 1 – 3 and then sort of lost interest. I have also googled spoilers for this last book. And I’ve never seen any of the movies. And yes, now you hate me! : )

I do like bagpipes but I’ve only heard them at two places – funerals in the US where I find them appropriate and actually in Scotland where they are super appropriate. I won’t be buying “Bagpipes Greatest Hits” or anything but I love them when played live.

I’m guessing we will not be anywhere near each other on the quadrant.

  40. Bagpipes? LOVE.
But if I never hear the bagpipes playing Amazing Grace, it’ll be too soon for me.
In the days/weeks/months following 9/11, the funerals for the firemen and police at St Patrick’s (my office was next door) was just too much for me. The next time I hear them, it will be at Kris’s grandfather’s funeral. And I’m happy to wait an ETERNITY for that.
Also? Totally unsolicited, but I also lurves me a fife and drum corps.
Harry Potter: Never read a single book, on my own contrary principal. But I won’t miss an opening night of the movie. Not once. COMPLETELY enchanted by them. But I lack the fantasy imagination to wrap my head around spells and curses and vomit-flavored jelly beans.

  41. Bagpipes are the worst invention EVER. So annoying.

LOVE, ADORE, ABSOLUTELY go freakin NUTSO over Harry Potter and his Hogwart’s school of witchcraft and wizardry crew. I pre-ordered my copy and am only now on chapter 11. I need to take some time off work to finish it.

  42. [...] the latest* quadrant? nope. Yeah. I know. I completely and utterly suck, Private Practice style. (*oops, from July. I [...]

  43. [...] like the timely release of this 3 months (plus) late quadrant, but I think I made it just in time to avoid causing a plague or locust infestation. [...]
