-image-Crafts for Boys & a Contest!

February 23, 2011 | "project!",Sewing

I’ve been making a LOT of hairclips — first flowers, then hearts. I don’t have girls — so all my work was given away to my lovely little girl friends of my lovely mommy friends. It’s been fun (for me — hopefully for them). My mom friends are so supportive and appreciative, and I love my little friends, so it’s been all good.

But I have two adorable and energetic boys whose hair is too short for hairclips! So. What can I do? Well, they do love dress-up, so I went with that theme.

First, I started with Superhero badges. I needed a use for these not-recyclable blue things (contest: what is the blue plastic thingy from)? Each one has a little pocket, so I knew I wanted to make a wallet/badge out of them.

Every Superhero badge has an emblem on the front with the child’s initial, and the inside features their picture so they can flash their badge with their age (and when they outgrow the age, they can be Superhero Agent No. 4, for example).

I liked the emblems so much I had to make larger ones and stick them onto capes, and with the extra fabric and constant supply of felt, I made some wristbands/power shields. I tell Nugget that they “pyow! pyow! the bad guys,” but I don’t think my explanation of “pyow!” is really working for him. I tried miming their laser-reflecting abilities, but he’s not buying Their Power (yet).

If you can guess the source of the blue badges, I’ll make your little boy friend his own cape and badge! Or, you can take a selection of flowers. Your choice!

-image-Best Picture

February 22, 2011 | TV/movie addiction

This whole 10 films being nominated for best picture is ridiculous. I’m not sure their exact reasoning why they widened the field to 10 last year, from five. This year, I’ve only seen four five of the 10 nominated films (in bold):

The King’s Speech (Just returned from seeing this — LOVED. THIS. MOVIE, and not just because *sigh* Mr. Darcy.)
The Social Network (LOVED THIS MOVIE — a modern day He Said He Said They Said. You’d get it if you saw it. Which you should — go NOW!)
Inception (really good but too long, and I’m not sure I “got it.”)
Toy Story 3 (really good)
The Kids are All Right (good but too long)
127 Hours
Black Swan
True Grit
Winter’s Bone
The Fighter

As a nonprofessional movie critic and film buff (not to be confused with professional buff movie star), let me just say, The Kids are All Right should not be nominated for best picture. I’m not even sure Toy Story 3 should be, unless they’re honoring the awesome trilogy that makes up the Toy Store franchise or Pixar, which only produces amazing and smart animation.

Still, there’s no reason for 10 best picture nominees this year. Can’t they announce anywhere from five to 10 based on some initial vote-receiving algorithm? Might I suggest a consult with one of the Facebook developers.

Since I brought up Pixar, have you seen their short films? I looove them. I’m a Pixar junkie — they are committed to excellent film making and animation, write great stories and clearly understand and love children. This short is my favorite.

February 10, 2011 | "project!"

Or something super funny that is suppose to be like the joyous spread of Felt Crafts throughout our fine nation kind of like Johnny Appleseed and those apple seeds.

More flowers. Heart hairclips (and no, I don’t need a little girl). And a big ol’ monogram for my nephew. Before this post, I made 12 more heart hairclips and three more pompom flowers. Save me from the felt.

As you might not be able to see in this crappily taken and unenhanced photo, I’m decorating for Valentine’s Day, and I made the banner meeeself out of FELT BABY FELT. And RIBBON. And I used scissors.

I can’t stop. Oh, and yes, that big glittery R is from Christmas. I’ll get rid of it ’round Easter. I promise. The subway art is from this awesome site. Check them out.

Please. If you see me circling a Michael’s store, ram me with your car.

February 1, 2011 | I'm an Idiot

I think to myself:

1. Wow, I don’t have the worst last name in the world.
2. If I were your friend, I’d get that legally changed.
3. Why would you pass that daily horror of a last name onto future generations?
4. Your friend dresses like a whore.
5. Your friend doesn’t make smart decisions with comments made/pictures posted…what’s your connection to her?
6. You’re friends with a lot of men I would consider douche-bags. Maybe I’m missing something.
7. I’m wasting a lot of time judging other people.
8. I should probably go spend time with my children.
9. I should probably go clean the house.
10. I should really try and see The Social Network.
11. Especially since the star’s dad was my favorite grad school professor.
12. Maybe I’ll just see again if he’s on Facebook.
13. Maybe I’ll see if some of my favorite high school teachers are on Facebook.
14. Maybe I should get a life.
15. Ok fine. I’ll log off now.
